What Makes Paddling in Cuyuna So Special?
The Crystal-Clear Waters
Cuyuna’s mine lakes offer 40 feet of water clarity. These stunning waters owe their origins to the region’s rich mining history. In 1918, the area boasted 27 active mines, and after the last mine closed in 1984, the open-pit mines gradually filled with groundwater, creating a chain of spectacular lakes—some plunging to depths of 550 feet.
Adding to their charm, the mine lakes are wonderfully serene—with minimal boat traffic! This makes them a paradise for paddleboarding, kayaking, and even scuba diving.
Direct Water Access at True North Basecamp
At True North Basecamp, our guests enjoy direct access to Armour Mine Lake #2, complete with a flat, sandy beach perfect for launching your kayak or paddleboard. From there, it’s easy to embark on a paddling journey across multiple mine lakes with short, accessible portages:
Start at Armour Mine Lake #2: Launch from the beach here at True North Basecamp.
Portage to Portsmouth Mine Lake: You can hop across the paved bike trail to another lake in minutes.
Explore More Lakes: Continue portaging to connect to Pennington Mine Lake or Mahnomen Mine Lake #1 for even more paddling adventures.
